Home Guard
These photographs of East Meon’s Home Guard were taken in the grounds of the Vicarage (now the Old Vicarage) in 1939/40, when the Reverend Milne was vicar. Frank Collyer was the commanding officer.

Seated: Jock Ward, Cliff Kille, H.Wynne, Reverend Milne, J. Chitty, Mr. Haskett, E. Gilbert, n.k. (The presence of Rev Milne indicates that the photo was taken in the first two years of the War, since he was replaced by Rev Saunders in 1941.)

Ernest Gilbert was my Grandad. Sadly no longer with us. He was a farm labourer and married the Ethel and had 11 children. My 2 uncles I never met Kenny and Ray are both buried in the village church and I remember as a child coming to keep the graves tidy. My Dad David is the only surviving child now and in his 80’s. I have very fond memories of East Meon as a child and wish I could come and visit but due to a disability and bad health I can drive anymore. Thank you for sharing on this archive.
